However, if baseball is America's pastime, then football is America's passion. If you need any proof of this, you have to look no further than the attention the sports get during their drafts.
This entire week, all the time I've spent driving to and from work (including the three hours I was stuck in the big snowstorm that rolled through Denver on Friday) I've spent listening to ESPN Radio. Even though baseball season has started up with so many great story lines-- such as the opening of the new Yankee Stadium and three players hitting for the cycle in the month of April-- the NFL draft has been getting at least as much, if not more, attention as MLB.
Let's face it. We're obsessed. Who could blame us? Draft day is almost like Christmas. We'll all wake up on Sunday morning and stumble downstairs, still in our pajamas, if we're lucky, to see what shiny new toy has been selected for us to play with. Sure, the kid down the block may have got something better than we did, and who knows, maybe we'll have reason to complain. But all in all, it'll be a very exciting and happy day, and we're all hoping we'll get what we want.
I could keep going on with the analogy, and I've actually thought of several more ways that it's exactly like Christmas, but I don't want to bore you. You people are sharp, and undoubtedly get the point.
With that said, I'm announcing that the next NFLfans contest will be officially unveiled next Saturday night, and will revolve around the new draft picks for the 2008 season.
Keep your eyes peeled! I'll have all the details on Saturday.
